A certain kind of room has quietly taken over the design world: warm but pared back, modern but never cold, built from olive greens, soft blush, oatmeal and undyed wool. It is minimalism with the heat turned up — and a handful of designers do it better than anyone. 1. Amber Lewis — Amber Interiors

California-casual, made considered. Amber Lewis has run her studio out of Calabasas since 2011 and, through her shop and two best-selling books — Made for Living and Made for Living Well — did as much as anyone to put ‘organic modern’ into everyday vocabulary. 2. Sarah Sherman Samuel

Sarah Sherman Samuel calls her style ‘warm modernism,’ and it is the clearest expression of the olive-and-blush palette we love. Known for playful curves, arched details and muted greens and dusty pinks, she has designed sought-after collections with Lulu & Georgia and Semihandmade, and her clean-yet-never-clinical rooms have a quiet sense of humour. 3. Athena Calderone — EyeSwoon

Athena Calderone treats a room like a still life. A designer, cook and author of the best-selling Live Beautiful, she builds tonal, sculptural, quietly luxurious spaces from plaster, stone and wood in the softest earth tones, and has translated that eye into collaborations with Crate & Barrel and RW Guild. 4. Shea McGee — Studio McGee

Studio McGee made the modern-classic neutral home mainstream. Founded in 2014 by Shea McGee and her husband Syd, the studio reaches millions through the Netflix series Dream Home Makeover, the homeware line McGee & Co., and the hugely popular ‘Threshold with Studio McGee’ collection at Target. 5. Colin King

Colin King is a stylist first, and it shows: his spaces are all breath and balance, a few beautiful objects arranged around a great deal of calm. Author of Arranging Things and a collaborator with the likes of Beni Rugs and Ferm Living, he is the person to study for the quiet art of leaving things out — the power of negative space made visible.
