A rug sets the tone of a room, but it needs company. The clean, modern, organic look everyone is chasing right now — warm woods, honest materials, soft neutrals and a little negative space — comes together only when the pieces around the rug share its restraint. These are five shops we return to for exactly that, a little about each, and the rug we would put beneath it all.

We are not affiliated with any of the shops below; we simply admire them. Every link opens in a new tab.
1. Slowobjet — the one to watch
Slowobjet is the newcomer on this list, and the one we are most curious about. Its name says everything about the sensibility: slow, considered objects for a modern organic home, made to be lived with rather than replaced. It is opening soon — worth signing up now so you catch the first collection. Visit: slowobjet.com.

2. The Citizenry
The Citizenry, founded in 2014, built its name on globally-inspired, artisan-made home goods produced in fair, long-term partnerships with makers around the world — warm, textural and ethically produced, much like our own approach to rugs. It is the place to find the ceramic, the throw or the hand-thrown lamp that makes a minimal room feel human. Visit: the-citizenry.com.

3. Ferm Living
For the Scandinavian end of organic modern, Ferm Living is hard to beat. The Copenhagen studio, founded in 2006 by Trine Andersen — it began, charmingly, with a single wallpaper print — works in soft, natural materials and gently organic shapes, the kind of quietly sculptural furniture and lighting that pairs beautifully with a low-pile wool rug. Visit: fermliving.com.

4. Thuma
If a clean, modern bedroom is the goal, Thuma is the obvious starting point. Inspired by Japanese joinery, its warm-wood, low-profile beds assemble without tools and are about as calm as furniture gets — and they look their best floating on a soft rug. Visit: thuma.co.

5. Sabai
Sabai rounds out the list for seating. Founded in 2019 with sustainability at its core, it makes its sofas and chairs to order in the United States from responsibly-sourced materials, and designs them to be repaired and re-covered rather than thrown away — a considered, long-lasting choice in the spirit of buying fewer, better things. Visit: sabai.design.

The floor beneath it all
Whatever you gather from the shops above, it will look better standing on the right rug. Our Beige Moroccan Shag with Tribal Diamonds is the kind of quiet, undyed foundation this whole look is built on — soft wool, a graphic hint of pattern, and a warmth that makes even the most minimal room feel like somewhere you want to stay. Hand-made and sold direct from our studio, it is where we would begin.

What these shops share
Look past the categories and the same values recur: natural materials over synthetic ones, a sense of where a thing was made and by whom, sustainability treated as a starting point rather than a slogan, and design calm enough to live with for years. It is the same brief we set ourselves — which is why their pieces and our rugs feel at home together.
